How to convert military time
Two simple rules cover every time of day.
- 1
Military to standard
From 0100 to 1259, just add AM (or PM for 1200 to 1259). From 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 and add PM: 1845 → 6:45 PM.
- 2
Standard to military
For AM times, write the hours with a leading zero: 7:15 AM → 0715. For PM times, add 12: 7:15 PM → 1915.
- 3
Watch noon and midnight
12 PM (noon) stays 1200. 12 AM (midnight) becomes 0000. These two are where most mistakes happen.
How to say military time
- On the hour: add “hundred”. 0600 is “zero six hundred”, 1400 is “fourteen hundred hours”.
- With minutes: say two numbers. 1730 is “seventeen thirty”; 2145 is “twenty-one forty-five”.
- Leading zeros: say them. 0815 is “zero eight fifteen” (some people say “oh eight fifteen”).
- Midnight: 0000 is “zero hundred hours”.
Who uses military time?
The US armed forces, hospitals and emergency services, airlines and air traffic control, and police all use the 24-hour clock because it can never be mixed up: 0700 and 1900 cannot both be read as “7 o’clock”. Pilots and the military also use Zulu time, which is UTC: “1500Z” means 15:00 UTC, which is 10:00 AM in New York in winter (EST) and 11:00 AM in summer (EDT).
