How to calculate hours from now
You can work it out on any clock in three steps.
- 1
Write the time in 24-hour form
2:30 PM becomes 14:30. Morning times stay the same, and 12 AM becomes 00:00.
- 2
Add the hours
14:30 + 8 hours = 22:30. Add any extra minutes too; 60 minutes carry over as one hour.
- 3
Subtract 24 for each new day
If the hour is 24 or more, take away 24 and move to the next day. 22:30 is under 24, so it stays today.
Example: 9:45 PM + 6 hours → 21:45 + 6 = 27:45 → 27:45 − 24 = 3:45 AM tomorrow.
Quick rules for common hours
- 12 hours from now: same clock time, AM and PM swapped.
- 24 hours from now: same time tomorrow.
- More than 12 hours: subtract the hours from 24 and go back that many hours on the clock, the next day. 18 hours from now = 6 hours earlier on the clock, tomorrow.
- 48 or 72 hours from now: the same time in 2 or 3 days. See 48 hours from now and 72 hours from now.
Why this calculator is more accurate
- Live to the second. The answer moves with the clock, so it is never out of date.
- Daylight saving time built in. Counting across a time change gives the true clock time, not a time that is an hour off.
- Any US time zone. Eastern, Central, Mountain, Arizona, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii, plus UTC and London.
- Start from any time. Not just from now: pick a start date and time.
- Private. Everything is calculated on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
What time will it be 8 hours from now?
Add 8 to the current hour. If it is 2:00 PM now, 8 hours from now is 10:00 PM the same day. If it is 6:00 PM, it is 2:00 AM tomorrow. The calculator at the top of this page shows the exact answer for your time zone, to the second.
What is 12 hours from now?
12 hours from now is the same clock time with AM and PM swapped. 9:15 AM becomes 9:15 PM, and 9:15 PM becomes 9:15 AM the next day.
What is 24 hours from now?
24 hours from now is the same clock time tomorrow. The only exception is the night daylight saving time changes, when the clock jumps an hour; the calculator handles that for you.
What is 16 hours from now?
16 hours from now is 8 hours earlier on the clock, the next day (because 16 = 24 − 8). If it is 3:00 PM now, 16 hours from now is 7:00 AM tomorrow.
How do I add hours to a time in my head?
Use the 24-hour clock: add the hours, and if the total is 24 or more, subtract 24 and move to the next day. For example, 19:00 + 9 hours = 28:00, and 28 − 24 = 04:00 tomorrow.
Does the calculator handle daylight saving time?
Yes. It counts real elapsed time and then shows the clock time in your chosen time zone, so the spring-forward and fall-back changes are always correct. In the US, daylight saving time ended on November 1, 2026 and starts again on March 14, 2027.
Can I count from a time other than now?
Yes. Change Start from to A time I choose, pick a date and time, and the calculator counts the hours from there.
Can I find out what time it was hours ago?
Yes. Switch the calculator to Ago, or use the hours ago calculator.
