In the US most people use the 12-hour clock with AM and PM, while the military, hospitals, airlines and most of the world use the 24-hour clock (often called military time). Converting between them takes seconds once you know the rule.
24-hour to 12-hour
- 00:00 to 00:59: add 12 and use AM (00:30 is 12:30 AM).
- 01:00 to 11:59: same numbers, AM.
- 12:00 to 12:59: same numbers, PM (12:15 is 12:15 PM).
- 13:00 to 23:59: subtract 12 and use PM (17:45 is 5:45 PM).
12-hour to 24-hour
- AM: keep the numbers, but 12 AM becomes 00.
- PM: add 12, but 12 PM stays 12.
Is midnight 12 AM or 12 PM? Midnight is 12:00 AM (00:00) and noon is 12:00 PM (12:00). To avoid confusion, many people write “12 midnight” or “12 noon”.
